What is Vestibular Rehabilitation Therapy?

Vestibular rehabilitation therapy (VRT) is a specialised form of physiotherapy that helps manage dizziness and balance problems. These issues can arise from various conditions, including:

  • Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV)

  • Meniere's Disease

  • Labyrinthitis

  • Vestibular Neuritis

  • Stroke

  • Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)

  • Migraine Headaches (in some cases)

VRT utilises targeted exercises designed to retrain your brain and inner ear (vestibular system) to work together more effectively. This approach may initially seem counterintuitive, as we may guide you through movements that temporarily worsen your dizziness.

However, this is a positive sign – you're stimulating your vestibular system correctly! Over time, with consistent participation, your symptoms will become more manageable and decrease.

How Does Vestibular Rehabilitation Work?

VRT addresses the root cause of dizziness and balance issues through three primary processes:

Adaptation: This involves retraining the brain to interpret signals from the vestibular system more accurately. As the program progresses, your brain gradually learns to adapt to these signals, eventually leading to improved balance and a reduction in dizziness.

Habituation: Repeated exposure to specific movements allows your body to become desensitised to the triggers that cause dizziness. By gradually increasing the complexity of the exercises, you'll learn to cope with these movements better in your everyday life.

Substitution: This strategy helps compensate for any permanent vestibular system damage. We will guide you in utilising other sensory inputs, such as vision and touch, to maintain balance and spatial awareness.
